I am in the IT field, and I have done a lot of research about this topic. I just mention this to anyone that needs some solid answers. Not to discredit what was mentioned earlier...I agree. However, I would like to expand a bit further. The average netbook is not on the same level as the average laptop. However, the best netbook is better than the lowest grade laptop. HP has a new netbook on sale on their website which offers Dual Core Processing, 3GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, WIFI + Bluetooth, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, 3 USB Ports, VGA Port and Webcam and Microphone for $449. That's a powerful little machine for a great price. Again, that's a step above the lowest laptop, and the $449 is a great price especially for a brand as big as HP. Right now, netbooks are great for administrative work, surfing the net, checking emails, playing more simple (non-multiplayer) games…what most people are looking for in an ultra-portable package. Keep in mind however, netbooks, as far as I’ve seen, DO NOT come with an optical drive (CD, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RW); meaning, add at least an extra $50 to that for a decent external drive which you WILL need for many things unless you are up to transferring needed files , software. So, in conclusion, I see that very powerful machines are going to be popping up very soon. With netbooks and tablets around, where does that put the laptop? Tablets lay somewhere between the cell phone and the netbook. They are not powerful enough for much more than what can be done on a phone, just with a bigger screen. Most tablets come with a 1GHz processor, and some cell phones do to. So, in my opinion, buy a nice desktop for home (multi-media, graphic design, music editing, serious gaming, etc.) and a netbook for the road (again, surfing the net, checking emails, playing lighter games, listening to music, etc.). I hope that this has answered some of your questions and concerns.

I have 3 questions:

1)If I get a netbook will I be able to use Skype and videochat OK or will there be some lag compared to laptops?
2)Will there be lag when watching streamed or downloaded videos?
3)Will it take a really long time to download movies and music?

If anyone can answer these questions, I will greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

While I agree that netbooks have come a long way in a short time, they're not up to par with laptops yet. Many complain about the smaller keyboards, and the hard drive space in several brands of netbooks is still 160gb or less. Connectivity via USB is a good option, as is the extended battery life, but no one should expect a netbook to compare power-wise with a laptop. It simply is not possible right now. If you use older software a lot, and don't do anything too complicated, you might get by with a netbook. But for any serious resource hog, you're better off with a full laptop.
